From the Desk of Dolly M. Garlo, RN, JD, PCC
Monday, September 7, 2009

Dear Friend,

Take a moment for a little personal self-reflection. Breathe deeply and relax.  Notice your heart beating. Now ask yourself these two important questions:

Are you enjoying your life and work everyday?

Are you making as big an impact as you’ve dreamed you would?

(Or wondering most days whether you’ve lost sight of your ideals?)

You’ve been managing just fine. You’ve done well in fact. Due to your years of study, hard work, and persistence, you've been successful and you’ve accomplished a lot. You may be financially set, even if your portfolio’s taken a hit lately. You’re grateful for your life in times that are incredibly difficult for so many others.

But it’s time to at least start considering what’s next, isn’t it?

These are important questions. You are a unique being who

  • thinks differently,

  • cares deeply, and

  • wants to do something of significance

Otherwise, you wouldn’t have made all the effort to build a business or professional practice.

With the upheavals in the economy, the environment, healthcare and social justice – around the world – it no longer feels comfortable to just do the same things the same way you’ve been doing them. If you have children, you want to be an example for them.

You’re ready for a change, and you want your efforts to count for something.

  • You want to leave things better than you found them

  • You daydream about building something big that makes a significant difference

  • You wonder what, and how you’ll bring that about

  • More importantly, how will you make the transition from where you are now to what and where that will be?!

Even though the money's coming in, do you really feel wealthy, abundant?  Sure, you've made money, and you’re comfortable in your lifestyle, but more money for more stuff isn’t what satisfies …

  • How much time do you actually get to spend with the people you love, doing the things you truly care about?

  • How would you like to do something that involves them, and teaches the power of giving and contribution?

You want to return the favor for the privileges in your life that got you to where you are. You want to feel that sense of abundance that comes with giving something – your time, interests, efforts, money, or some combination that works for your life situation – to benefit other people, places or things on the planet.

Not so much giving back, as giving forward …

What would you like your legacy to be?
Making Money? Or, Making Sense?
How About “Both, and” …
the Number Of Lives You Change for the Better?

If you’re being honest, you know the answer. It’s not one or the other. It’s not us or them. It’s both, and …

It is not about making a choice between making money and making a difference. Many spiritual books throughout the ages have incorporated the law of reciprocity, which goes something like this: it is in giving that we receive. Whatever you do will be returned to you.

We all learned it as children, and pass it on to the next generation. To have friends, be friendly. The more you help others, the more comes back to you. The more value you add, the more the universe rewards you.

The global economic challenges of 2008-2009 impacted everyone – many far more than others. In some parts of the world, people had very little to begin with and are still in need.

  • The ecosystems we all need for our successful survival are suffering over the continued use of fossil fuels and increasing demand for energy around the world. They need support.

  • We all need the creation of ecologically sound, clean energy alternatives. Developing nations need them for the basics like clean water, refrigeration, medical care and education, and to avoid the problems the infrastructures of developed nations caused.

  • Here at home, poverty and homelessness need solutions

  • Both the very young and the very old need attention, teenagers and young adults need support, and even young business people need mentors.

  • Speaking of education, academic and vocational, physical education and the arts are all suffering, and we are losing ground in the areas of both intellectual and emotional, not to mention spiritual, intelligence.

There are plenty of places and plenty of ways to get involved and make a positive mark – to make those “quality improvements” we always talk about in business.

decorative

No matter what your situation, your resources and skills,
you have a lot to contribute and CAN make a positive impact in an area you care about – without sacrificing.
In fact, you can be enriched beyond measure
by your involvement.

There is a sweeping social change going on around the world as people realize more and more how interdependent we are. As people turn off sensationalized television programming, and meet each other on the street and the world over online, we all realize how much we need one another – and that ultimately our actions impact one another in important ways.

There is something each and every one of us can do, with what we have, from wherever we areand what that is will be your legacy. There is no time like now to start.

“There are no passengers on spaceship earth. We’re all crew.”
– Marshall McLuhan

Fortunately, we are moving away from an age of blind consumerism – and over-consumption. It is hurting our waistlines, our bottom lines, affecting us body and soul. More and more people are looking for greater meaning and purpose – and to contribute something that has a positive impact on the world.

Success is being redefined as something more than amassing large sums of money and property – and instead looking at them like the powerful tools they are. That is true of all our resources – all forms of capital, which we are learning better to value holistically: not just in financial terms, but to include built/infrastructure, human, social/interactive/community and natural forms of capital, as well.

By all means, be comfortable and feel abundant in your lifestyle – whatever that means for you. It is hard to give from a place of lack. When you get to that place of enough, though, encompassing what you truly value, you finally move beyond a mindset of lack and the need for ever more – to truly feel satisfied and successful.

“Money has no power of its own.
You alone are the power source.”
-- Suze Orman

Our modern societies forgot that money was originally invented by humans to be able to more freely exchange needed good and services. We were indoctrinated into economic theories based on the presumption of scarcity. Notions like:

  • There is not enough, never enough of anything. It is a fear filled way of living in the world. So we must strive and strive.

(When we know deep down that happiness is not having more of what we want. It is wanting, and enjoying more, what we already have.)

  • More is better – when we know full well that more can be a headache. It’s one thing to sip from a beautiful clear (unpolluted) stream, and entirely another to try to drink from a fire hose.

(It’s the simple pleasures that everyone really seeks – more time with family, friends, enjoying the outdoors, art, music, culture, laughing, relaxing, sharing a conversation or a meal. Smelling more flowers along the way …)

  • That’s just the way it is. There’s nothing we can do about it.

When we gave more power to these scarcity ideas, we got more and more lost in consumerism and ceased to be citizens in the marketplace.

But there is something we can each do to start living differently, from a place of gratitude for the gifts in our lives.

We have choices every single day about how to earn, save, nurture, protect and spend our precious resources of time, money, intellect, heart, and effort. How to value some aspect of life, make it better, expand its benefit and pass it on. You know these are the things that really feel good, jazz you, get your juices flowing.

“When you make a difference with what you have, it expands.
What you appreciate, appreciates.”
-- Lynne Twist

It’s time to return to being citizens: responsibly creating and appreciatively exchanging goods and services, filling needs by adding value, enjoying what and who we have in our lives, and feeling satisfied, proud, successful, abundant … and joyful.

And the only way to do it is to stop just going along the way we have, and to take steps to create something different.

That is the work. Taken on even little by little, one step at a time, it moves us – and world economies – away from an emphasis on infinite economic growth (which is not viable) and toward a focus on sustainable human wellbeing.

It's time for change…

A legacy? Yes, and it’s far more than just a collection of property and assets left in an estate plan to distribute after you’re gone. This is about using your life energies to create something you genuinely care about, infused with your authentic values – a beneficial project that makes a difference now and lasts for generations.

For the first time ever, you have the opportunity to come together with a select group of others to explore this territory. Guided through a program you can participate in from the comfort of your home, you will share an eight week journey to find a new level of fulfillment, passion, purpose and joy.

This program is for you as a business owner, professional or social entrepreneur – as a leader ready to ‘be the change you wish to see in the world’ and create something to begin to make that happen.

You know you appear to be a successful leader on the outside, but on the inside you feel like there’s something more for you to do.

You have a dream. A vision. You know you’d like to make a positive difference. There is something that bugs you that needs to be fixed. You have an idea of what it would be like to change something for the better. It could change lives. Maybe even change the world…

You think about it, but you just can't quite figure out how to make this happen – to get there from where you are.

That's where the 7 Steps to Creating Your Legacy program comes in.

The program will give you all the fundamentals to change the world in a way you find meaningful, with your skills and resources, and on your terms … including others you care about, and while still being able to do the work you’re currently doing, if you choose.

Sounds to good to be possible, right? Here’s why it’s entirely possible:

There are plenty of people who’ve come before you, some with far fewer resources than you have, who have made great and lasting contributions. There are plenty of different forms to utilize, and models exist for them all. I’ve done this myself, and it’s one of the best things I’ve ever done – so now I dedicate my life to helping other people do it, too.

Here's a little background...

Dolly's Story

Image1In the late 1990’s, Dolly Garlo was a practicing health care attorney in Austin, Texas. She was engaged full time in running her own firm, and involved in a professional coach training program getting geared up to make a career transition from the conflict-laden, problem-solving orientation of law to the more creative and developmental work of helping clients with business development, systems, human resources management and marketing and successful operations that avoid legal trouble.

Then her beloved mother living in NW Ohio – her role model and dear friend – got sick. It was the condition, a cascading failure of the medical world to be able to treat, called cancer. And it didn’t appear there was much time left.

Being the attorney in the family, it was up to her to help her parents navigate the legal system, get their estate plans in order, re-title assets into the trust their lawyer had set up (but never assisted them to transfer), discuss and document health care treatment decisions … and ultimately make memorial plans. Living far away, Dolly was determined to run her law practice from the law library in Toledo if she had to – she wasn’t going to miss being there with her mom at the end. So lots of things had to be set up in her own business to be able to manage it from a distance, maintain high quality legal services to clients and give her time to travel.

Then, her father’s Parkinson’s disease began to progress. There was more to do because while assets had all been transferred from mom to dad, in accordance with their wishes, there was still “the matter of the farm.”

With her sister, also busy – an obstetrician and mother of three – figuring out how to manage a 300-plus acre working Ohio farm was crucial because neither one of them had the time or the wherewithal.

These sisters, the “Garlo Girls,” were first generation daughters of Polish and Lithuanian immigrant physicians, who arrived in the U.S. in 1948 having escaped both Communist and Nazi occupations and WWII. The family culture included hard work, accomplishment, escaping adversity to create a better life, and passing along something meaningful to future generations. Through work, study, saving and investment, the family acquired the farmland over a 30 year period. It represented a refuge from the possibility of another war, and a love of nature, the outdoors and self-sufficiency.

So the next task at hand was to figure out what to do with the property, while keeping its meaning alive.

Fortunately, dealing with estate planning and treatment decision communications and documents was over, but now there was a maze of new issues, advisors, land use and tax matters and paperwork. It would have been so helpful to have just one advisor or set of resources to help navigate the myriad family, property, financial, health care, legal and personal life, not to mention emotional and other issues and decisions …

The land had been a refuge of sorts, for the family, friends, and all manner of land and water flora and fauna. After a lot of research and exploration, and a big dose of serendipity, what emerged was the possibility of using the land to create the county’s first park. Through many meetings, discussions, finding the right people, negotiation, financial calculations, consideration of tax matters, and thoughtfully crafted agreements, the Garlo Heritage Nature Preserve was born. (See www.senecacounty.com/parks/Garlo.htm.)

Since then, park commissioners, along with numerous volunteers, have built it into a natural resource that people in the surrounding area use and likewise honor. Scout troops master camping skills, build trails and plant trees. School groups learn about nature first-hand. Horse-lovers ride the equestrian trails. Handicap-accessible boardwalks and strategically placed benches allow the elderly and others to commune with the peace and quiet of nature in the wooded countryside year-round. A complete historic pioneer village is planned and the working blacksmith shop is already set up. The most recent addition has been a Montessori nature day pre-school program.

All these results occurred because of the efforts of others to whom this valuable land resource has been entrusted. It is far more than what two sisters could have done in a lifetime, but it all flowed from what they got started. First an idea, built on values and a vision, became a set of activities coupled with a carefully structured contribution and estate plan, financial and tax considerations, and resulted in a sustainable operation. The question of “what to do with the farm” has become a living legacy that others can enjoy for generations to come. And one of the most meaningful results imaginable.

So …

After years of work and career changes, and an almost magical experience combining issues of family, values, experience in legal issues and business development, Dolly came to a realization.

She discovered that part of her true calling involved conservation and nature preservation, so she incorporated that into her “work” in the world. (She currently chairs the Board of Directors of an environmental organization devoted to protection and sustainable use of the Florida Keys National Marine Sanctuary).

As a professional, she realized the service she truly wanted to provide to clients was to help them have a similar experience designing and building their own unique contributions – at whatever level they could. And to get a message out to the world about what an amazing journey that is. Beyond parenting, and including family members (or not as individual circumstance dictates), the process of truly seeing the world become a better place because of your efforts, is one of the most fulfilling and joyful creative acts there is. And the forms that can take, are endless …

From there, Creating Legacy was born. As clients have offered:

“Dreams are one thing – but bringing them into reality takes a leap of faith and courage.  Without time spent with my coach, Dolly, I would not have been able to finally declare that what I wanted to do next was to create [my medical] device and bring it to market. Step by step, together, we worked a plan – first with a patent application – then finding a company to make a prototype – then with building a business team – then with finding a design firm to actually create the device – then with raising capital to move forward – all the while networking to find others to join in — and the dream has become a reality.”

-- Sharon Conley, MD, PhD, Founder/President, AVANCEN, LLC

“To say that Dolly has helped me realize what I really want to be doing and execute on that vision would be an understatement. I went into the finance industry as a way to get close to Hollywood, since my dream had always been to work in motion pictures ... and 15 years later I discovered that I still had an interest in Movie Making.  No sooner than we had that conversation during which Dolly mentioned that my business skills would serve nicely in a producer role, she made a request that I begin exploring the film industry again.  Quite directly, I got an email from a Director/Writer team looking for a Producer. We joined together several months after that and formed a production company called South Austin Pictures that now has made 2 feature films over the last 2 years.  … I know the business I’ve built so far in my life is one form of the Legacy I will create… [and I’ve made a] start toward producing films with the types of subjects and messages that I want to develop and leave for others.”

-- Lou Manitzas, CEO, OneSource Financial Corporation

So that’s my story. Really not that different from what life will inevitably bring your way – and that you can choose to exercise consciously and proactively. And you can benefit from the experience and investment in education I’ve made to help you.

It's been quite the ride for sure, but

Want to know something important?

The best part of it all is participating in something you love and truly helping others. It’s an indescribable feeling you have to experience to appreciate.

When people share, with that deep sense of satisfaction, that helping them change their lives to be more creative and productive in a way that makes a difference and means so much to them, it’s also an incredible joy for me.

To make such a significant difference in the lives of people just like you – makes all I’ve gone through to arrive at this place and time, doing the work I’m doing now, well worth the journey.

Does this sound good to you? Of course it does! So:

Are You Ready to Discover Your Personal Legacy –
and in Your Own Authentic Way,
Make the Positive Impact That Only You Can?

If the answer is YES, here’s some great news:

You can break through to a new level of fulfillment, and it can begin now.

Let’s talk about the transformation you are going to experience.

Through the 7 Steps to Creating Your Legacy program, you will design your own project – something you know will truly make a difference in the lives of others beyond the work you’re now doing or have done up until now. Developing this project will bring about transformational results for you, in addition to those who benefit from your project. The appreciation and gratitude you’ll receive is a bonus, beyond the priceless gift of knowing the impact you’ve made with your life.

During the process, you’ll have an opportunity to examine your life and work holistically, make a plan for how you really want to be spending your life energy, and decide –

  • what legacy really means to you and how you will live it starting now – not something that’s just as part of a plan to be implemented after you’re gone

  • whether you want to continue on with your current work in the world, adding a social responsibility component, or to step away to do something else … when and how to do that

  • how you want to include and interact with family and community

  • what knowledge, experience, special skills and talents you have that really ‘jazz you’ to work with (this may surprise you, be very different from your career activities, and actually be fun)

  • where you want to make your impact, leave your “mark” – and maybe even where you want to live or spend your time rather than where you are now

  • what you truly value and care about enough to spring out of bed each day to work on – good, even great work, not just hard work – to feel productive and rewarded well beyond what money can buy

  • who you want to benefit – which may focus on family and may also be way beyond what you think is possible, hundreds, even thousands of people you may never even know

  • what form, of many, works best for what you want to build or deliver

  • who else needs to be involved and how best to find and engage them

  • how to make the project sustainable so it endures and can benefit others beyond now to future generations

  • and much more …

You’ll get to work with someone who’s been through the process, studied what others have done, ‘knows the ropes’ in terms of structuring, systematic operations, financial management, estate planning and tax implications, how to find the best advisors to work with … and maybe best of all, someone whose clients call her a phenomenal performance coach. A self-described “practical dreamer” who can help you harness the power of your ideals and actually bring them to life – and to help you, step by step, get from where you are to where you really want to go.

All these transformations are available to you via our new program beginning in October, encompassing the:

"7 Steps To Creating Your Legacy"

Since this is the first time all these topics and materials will be delivered to a group, enrollment is limited to 25 participants because we want to allow for as much individual input and feedback as possible. All sessions are live and in real time, nothing canned or previously recorded – and they utilize a coaching approach (not merely training and dissemination of information). So, your active participation will be encouraged and will help further develop the program to be exactly what you need it to be – you will truly be part of the design process. The enrollment fee will never be this low again.

Also, if you attended a prior preview call (“Why Women Business Owners and Professionals Must Create a Legacy”) and register for the 7 Steps program prior to the close of business Friday, September 25, 2009, you will benefit from our early bird registration discount.

You’ll go through our 7 Step process over a 7-week period, with an extra 8th week follow up session. You will receive handouts, templates, checklists, and other resources, and ultimately create your own personal blueprint so you’re ready to implement everything you want to do – even before the program is over, if you want to start that quickly.

Here’s what we’ll cover in each of our sessions together:

Wednesday 10/07/09
Week 1:
Step One ~
Create the Vision: to begin, you must have an end in mind, something to work toward. This takes knowing yourself, identifying what you value, knowing who you care about, and defining what you want to do and where you want to make your impact.

Wednesday 10/14/09
Week 2:

Step Two ~ Gather the Resources: this step focuses on what you already have to contribute to the project, what else you need, and who you want and need to be involved.

Wednesday 10/21/09
Week 3:

Step Three ~ Design the Plan: the old saying ’failing to plan is like planning to fail’ applies at this step, so we cover the basics of laying out a successful implementation plan, which becomes your roadmap or blueprint.

Wednesday 10/28/09
Week 4:

Step Four ~ Develop the Infrastructure: this is where the project begins to actually take shape and building the foundation begins.

Wednesday 11/04/09
Week 5:

Step Five ~ Build the Bridge: depending on where you are when you start on this legacy building journey, you may have to re-group and redefine other aspects in your life as you move from where you are to where you’re going with your project.

Wednesday 11/11/09
Week 6:

Step Six ~ Structure the Project: based on your definition of legacy, your dream for seeing it come to fruition, the identified resources you have and need, the design and plan, here’s where you choose the most effective structure, add strategic business development and marketing design so others know what you’re up to, and develop operational systems to keep things going consistently and sustainably.

Wednesday 11/18/09
Week 7:

Step Seven ~ Harvest the Rewards and Keep It Going: when your legacy project is operational, you not only get to feel the joy of that experience. You also get to realize the appreciation and gratitude generated by those it helps, and those it inspires to contribute and be part of it. You get to celebrate the gift to you that is your gift to others! At this point you can begin to implement a succession plan, so activities needed to keep it operational transition smoothly to others, and an exit-plan that allows you to step away without disconnecting. You get to play the part you want to play as long as you want to play it, building your legacy to live on for generations.

Though at this point, we will have addressed each of the 7 steps, we are not finished! We’ll take a week off to be thankful for our progress and our blessings – the U.S. celebrates Thanksgiving this week – and then come back together for a final call.

Wednesday 12/02/09
Week 8:

BONUS CALL ~ time for your questions, comments, sharing, final exchanges of information, and discussing what’s next.

If you can't make some of the live calls, no worries. You will get a recording of each call so you can listen to it again at your leisure.

By the end of the program, you’ll have a blueprint for your legacy project that you’ll have begun implementing. The outline will allow you to continue to build it until you can step away, knowing it will continue to benefit others for a long time to come.

Imagine, 6 months from now finding yourself focused in a different direction, having created an experience in which you feel a sense of passion again, like you are on purpose, doing something you came here to do, making a real difference, receiving appreciation for it, and feeling really great about it.

The “7 Steps To Creating Your Legacy” Program is priced
So You Can’t Say No!

This is a program that will create incomparable change in your life going forward, if you simply apply the concepts and take action as we go through the steps.

You can do it part-time, still having time to engage in the work you’re doing now. But you may be ready to make some big changes in your work and life sooner rather than later. And, that’s when things get really fun.

But, we’re jumping the gun here. Before you can get there, you need to learn the steps of the program because otherwise, you are adding three to five years to your learning curve and to gather all the resources you’ll need.

There is a bunch to learn, no doubt. And a lot to do to build something big and really impactful that may well be life-changing. But, whatever the size or scope, it can take a lot longer going through the frustrating process of trial and error – or worse, the pain of not making the change you really want to make for yourself and the world.

This program identifies all the steps I’ve uncovered to really identify your values, ideals and passions again, be involved in bringing them to life and making them sustainable so they continue to benefit others without your direct involvement. (And then you can do it again if you want!) And finding a true sense of joy and fulfillment ... a priceless benefit.

If you are ready to create your own legacy blueprint, join the group in these 8 intensive sessions – by teleconference from the comfort of wherever you happen to be – beginning October 7. (Remember, you’ll also get mp3 audio recordings and digital handouts for each call).

But there’s more!

Additional benefits for you:

Participation in the 7 Step program includes these bonuses

Bonus #1:
A Private Consultation Session with Dolly

During the course of the program, you may schedule a one-on-one private consultation session with Dolly. She has been partnering with individual clients to deliver much of this material for close to 20 years. Hone in on what is going on specifically with and for you, and she’ll assist you to leap over roadblocks, conflicts or concerns that may come up for you. VALUE: $275

And if you’re one of the first 10 people to respond, we’ll double that and give you two individual private sessions. (Value $525)

In addition …

Bonus #2:
Private, Ongoing Follow Up Consultation
with Dolly at a Discount

One of the reasons Dolly incorporates professional coaching into the work she does is because she’s personally experienced something you probably have, too:

You attend a great seminar or event and are all fired up to do something with it. You take all the materials home or to the office, intending to go through them again and keep going with what you started. Then you get back into your day to day routine. The collection of materials ends up on a shelf, buried under a dozen other projects and you find yourself disappointed – and disillusioned with yourself about being able to make the changes you got all excited about. Then you start to question whether it’s even possible or just some pipe dream.

Sound familiar? Making changes is a process that requires consistency, persistence and regular action. Coaching is a process of working with an accountability partner, who can also be a trusted advisor, shortcut your steps and keep you in action.

So to really make sure you get the full value of your participation, Dolly wants to work directly with you at the beginning of the new year to really get things in place. Dolly’s Platinum Level Individual Private Coaching Package is $750 a month. Completing the 7 Step program entitles you to three months of follow up coaching for $1800.VALUE $450

So, let’s talk about the investment. The bonuses themselves exceed the cost of the program! So, when you hear the investment you are going to ask, why aren’t you charging more?

Here's the deal...

You are going to spend 8 hours on the phone from the comfort of wherever you are, no travel required, along with a small group of other kindred souls focused on creating something that makes the world a better place. Together we’ll go through a process of actually designing and building your legacy project. During the 7 Step program, you’ll get the resources, templates, checklists and coaching previously only available privately at a much higher cost.

It’s so affordable, it’s crazy not to take advantage of the program.

Plus, you get one, maybe two (if you’re one of the first 10 to register) private bonus coaching sessions during the program. Add to that three months of discounted coaching after the program to really keep you focused and in action working with a professionally trained business development and personal effectiveness coach, with a legal and healthcare/wellness background – bonuses worth up to $975 total!
