MORE ABOUT COACHING

Coaching* works because of some specific factors that differentiate it from other practices:

Purpose - to seek client-defined fulfillment by accomplishing goals, transitioning to something different, or creating something that does not yet exist;

Process -  includes awakening, challenging and supporting the client to take action -- small, consistent steps often leading to exponential leaps -- that build or develop what the client chooses to create;

Structure - a context of client focus, support and encouragement for defining goals, removing blocks and taking action, to which the client supplies commitment to making changes;

Expertise - a trained and/or certified coach has skills and tools to assist the client to make better choices and decisions, set clearer goals, make more money, restructure their professional and personal lives; build something new; this may be combined with other professional knowledge and experience depending on the coach's background;

Relationship Synergy - the client and coach become a team, allowing for bigger, faster and more satisfying results than the client would achieve alone; this is due, in part, to consistency and accountability, features of the unique relationship between client and coach that includes a system of progress checks, regular clarification and re-orientation toward the client's chosen outcomes.

By contrast:

  • Consulting: an expertise tool -- a person with greater knowledge or experience in a particular area assists a person or organization lacking in that knowledge or experience primarily by assessing or advising.  Many coaches are consultants; but not all consultants are coaches.  A coach's consulting expertise is based upon background and experience.  Mine includes in-depth knowledge of human growth and development, business, law and lots of life experience.

  •  Mentoring: an advancing tool -- a person of greater station, expertise or experience assists another to improve his/her position within an organization or system.  Many professional settings and organizations fail to even utilize the concept of mentoring, let alone have anyone really trained to help others advance.  Together, we can develop more of that for your organization.

  • Therapy: a dysfunction or disease oriented problem-solving tool -- a person of greater education helps or therapeutically treats another individual who is suffering or struggling due to physical, emotional or psychosocial difficulties.  If therapy is what's needed, a referral to a trained specialist is required.  This is NOT what coaching, consulting and training are about.

Coach training programs meeting certain standards are accredited by the International Coach Federation.  Individual practitioners may obtain a professional coaching credential from ICF as well, by meeting and maintaining certain core coaching competencies and adhering to defined ethical guidelines.

*Coaching is a collaborative process for assisting individuals and organizations to maximize results based on attributes and skills they already possess or are willing to develop.  Persons seeking legal, psychological or financial advice should contact a local licensed professional.
